Espero: hope and the desire to discover new oceans

The View of 1513

1475

A Thirst for Adventure

Vasco Núñez de Balboa was born into a noble but impoverished family. All we need to know about his childhood and youth is that they were shaped by dreams and the desire to emulate the voyages of discovery of Christopher Columbus.

1500

The Call of the New World

He joined an expedition to the wild coast of present-day Panama and Colombia and then settled on Hispaniola as a planter and farmer. His business eventually fails, and instead of wealth he is left with enormous debts.

1509

The Stowaway

He escapes his creditors as a stowaway hidden in a barrel, together with his dog Leoncico. Once he is discovered, his life hangs by a thread, but he wins them over with his charisma and his thorough knowledge of the dangerous region, which may come in handy.

1510

Mayor and Governor

After abandoning the decimated original base and winning a battle, he founds the famous town of Santa María la Antigua del Darién. It becomes the first permanent European settlement on the continent. The fugitive suddenly turns into mayor and governor.

1512

The Hunt for Golden Treasure

He explores the Caribbean coast, builds alliances and expands his influence. Meanwhile, he listens to rumours of a kingdom full of gold on the shores of “another sea”. Fascinated by the legend of the unknown sea, he prepares an expedition in pursuit of glory and riches.

1513

The Hell of the Isthmus of Panama

At the head of a determined expedition of Spaniards, native guides and a few dogs, he sets out into dense jungle, swamps, mountainous terrain and hostile territory. They literally hack their way forward, machete in hand.

25. 9. 1513

Mar del Sur – the Uncharted Ocean

He climbs to the summit and becomes the first European to see the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean from the New World. He names the newly discovered ocean the South Sea and claims its waters and the adjacent lands for the Kingdom of Spain.

The Taste of Today

The Legacy of Hispaniola

All Ron Espero rums and Espero liqueurs share the same solid foundation: premium Dominican rums made in the traditional Spanish style. This style is a direct tribute to Hispaniola, the island where Balboa’s grand story began. Born from high-quality sugarcane molasses, our rums undergo precise column distillation and then age patiently in the traditional solera system. This dynamic ageing process continuously brings together rums of different ages, resulting in an exceptionally smooth, harmonious and elegant profile.

Mapping New Flavours

Just as the Spanish expeditions opened the door for future seafarers, Ron Espero pushes beyond the boundaries of a single island. We masterfully blend our signature Dominican rums with characterful vintage rums from other iconic destinations: Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana.

These islands represent the distinct European influences and maritime expeditions that historically shaped the diverse Caribbean rum-making traditions – such as the British style of pot-still distillation and the static ageing of vintage rums. By combining a smooth Dominican base with these bold vintage rums, we create complex flavour maps that bring together the very best qualities of the whole Caribbean in a single bottle.

From the Wild “Kill-Devil” to Liquid Luxury

Did you know that the earliest ancestors of rum in the 17th century were almost undrinkable for ordinary people? The first Caribbean sailors had to face a harsh, fiery and oily spirit that earned the infamous nickname “Kill-Devil”. To make this rough spirit drinkable, resourceful sailors began macerating local tropical fruit directly in the casks. What started as a desperate trick for survival at sea unintentionally gave rise to the world’s first rum cocktails. This simple solution evolved into a tradition, and that tradition became the style we know today as fruit rum liqueurs.

Pure Sophisticated Innovation

Today, we no longer use fruit to mask flaws. Instead, we use it to elevate an already flawless premium spirit to an entirely new, complex sensory level. No hiding, just pure, sophisticated luxury in a bottle.

Our liqueurs are built on premium Dominican rum aged for 7 years and more using the solera method. It is smooth, rounded and deliberately crafted to complement the main ingredient rather than overpower it. While the rum provides a smooth and stable base, carefully selected fruit adds a distinctive, recognisable character. For a natural balance and to enhance the final taste, we add only pure cane sugar from the island of Mauritius.

Drink them neat, add one large ice cube or elevate your favourite cocktail – be it a refreshing highball, a tropical tiki twist or an elegant spritzer.

We wanted a rum that respects where it comes from, and yet tastes exactly the way we like it today.
